This article is intended to make a brief analysis of the concept of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the way in which the EIA is framed in major international jurisdictions; namely, in European (including Spain) and US legislation as well as in key international legal instruments. The subject has been deeply reviewed by both authors and legislators around the world and this article is simply intended to act as a reminder of the main legal elements that make up this material environmental instrument.
